SEC Introduces IDEA, the next-generation of the EDGAR system

On August 19, Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox introduced IDEA (Interactive Data and Electronic Applications), which will eventually replace the current EDGAR system as the primary source for all SEC filings. IDEA relies on XBRL to help investors get faster, more accurate and more meaningful information about public companies and mutual funds and will enable easier investment comparisons. Improvements over the EDGAR system include faster access to information, better search capabilities and the ability to download information directly to Excel spreadsheets and other software - currently a manual process. With IDEA, investors will be able to instantly collate information from thousands of companies and forms, and create reports and analysis on the fly, in any way they choose. Companies' interactive data filings are expected to be available through IDEA beginning at the same time that companies are required to submit to the SEC in XBRL format.
