Learn about Open Source XBRL Tools Now Available, Contest Requirements
Join the second XBRL Challenge event and webinar to learn about contest requirements, the XBRL database and other tools available, and how contestants have a chance to win the $20,000 Grand Prize.
The XBRL Challenge is a contest designed to spark innovative ideas for analytical applications that consume XBRL financial statement data that has been submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s EDGAR database. The Challenge provides a unique opportunity to learn about XBRL, a technology standard that’s coming into widespread use.
What: Current and prospective contestants, other interested parties should attend to ask questions of the experts, see demonstrations and learn about:
- Arelle®, an open source XBRL project that can be leveraged by contestants in their own application development
- Other open source XBRL applications
- Requirements and deadlines
When: Monday, September 26, 2011 from 3:30 – 4:30 PM CT

XBRL US is the non-profit consortium for XBRL business reporting standards in the U.S. and it represents the business information supply chain. About Arelle
Arelle is an Open Source Python XBRL framework that encourages rapid design and development of XBRL applications by providing an easy to use facility for XBRL processing. Arelle was designed to handle two challenges: the high-barrier to entry for applications developers wishing to work with XBRL content and the stringent requirements of the experienced XBRL developers who wrote the XBRL specification. It lets you build high-performing, elegant XBRL applications quickly. Arelle focuses on automating as much as possible when it comes to processing XBRL content and adhering to often complex and dense XBRL specifications.
Developed by core XBRL specification contributors, Arelle supports XBRL extension features not widely available, including versioning, which provides a formal model of the differences between taxonomies, newly emerging validation (IFRS Global Filer Manual), table linkbase, and full implementation of XBRL formula. A compact model-driven architecture unifies these extensions in a manner that is both a comprehensible and maintainable implementation (in terms of source code size), and easily usable by the research community.
