XBRL US submitted a comment letter responding to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) request concerning proposed changes to Form 730, the Report of Electric Transmission of Investment Activity, and their proposal that the revised content be prepared in XBRL format. We agree with the FERC proposal as written, because much of the data required to be reported is financial in nature, and because XBRL is already required of these reporting entities.

In addition, proposed changes to Form 730 will increase the complexity of the data to be reported by requiring the reporting of project-by-project totals, rather than only aggregates; including project codes that can be used as a key for data consumers to connect data reported on Table 1 (Actual and Projected Electric Transmission Capital Spending) with data reported on Table 2 (Project Detail); requiring the inclusion of report year, aggregate actual and projected spending by project, notes, and project voltage data, among other changes. This added complexity can be easily handled by the XBRL standard, to render reporting information into machine-readable data.
