Wealth of XBRL data now available means significant opportunity for developers

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — XBRL US today announced the introduction of a new one-day conference, the XBRL Data Forum, which will take place September 11, 2012 in Austin, Texas, and will be held in conjunction with the XBRL US national conference, Current Developments in XBRL Financial Reporting, September 10-12, 2012. The XBRL Data Forum program is designed to help technologists and developers gain a better understanding of XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language), how to manage XBRL databases and how to work with XBRL data produced using the US GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy. XBRL is an XML-based global technology standard that is currently used in the United States for the reporting of public company financial statement data submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). XBRL is also required for the reporting of bank institution call report data. XBRL creates tagged, computer-readable data out of financial statement information which was previously only available as HTML or text, thereby improving the accuracy and timeliness of the data, and making it much easier to consume large volumes of data.

“8,800 public companies now report their financial information, down to the detailed level in XBRL format,” said Campbell Pryde, President and CEO, XBRL US, “The investment market is just waking up to the possibilities available to them with better, more actionable data for analysis. That means significant opportunities for developers who have an expertise in working with XBRL and in particular, with XBRL SEC data.”

The XBRL Data Forum will feature keynote presentations from the SEC and from Gary Hoover, entrepreneur and co-Founder, Hoovers.com. Sessions will cover the XBRL value proposition for data consumers, XBRL database structure, manipulating XBRL financial statement data for use in analytical tools and building an XBRL business.

Developers, software companies, IT professionals and technology consultants should all attend to learn and network.
