The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) published the rule proposal, Short Position and Short Activity Reporting by Institutional Investment Managers which aims to provider greater transparency through the publication of short sale related data to investors and other market participants. If passed as proposed, institutional investment managers that meet or exceed a specified reporting threshold would be required to report, on a monthly basis using proposed Form SHO, specified short position data and short activity data for equity securities.

Under the rule, proposed Form SHO would be required to be filed in structured XML format, although the proposal raises the question as to whether Inline XBRL should be adopted instead.

Comments are due no later than April 26, 2022.

Read the proposal.
